Real Survivor Stories from Bay Area Pimp Culture | What’s Pimpin’? Ep. 3
In a discussion with hip-hop artists Maddy Clifford (a.k.a. @MaddyClifford), Coco Peila (@CocoPeila) and RyanNicole (@MzRyanNicole) RyanNicole and Coco Peila, survivor advocate Xenia St. Charles explains how struggling young people get lured into exploitation - including in the Bay Area, which is an international hub for sex trafficking. Womanist writer and podcast host Tiara Mbonisi of Big Mouf Woman also offers tools women can use to protect themselves in a misogynistic culture.
📖 Chapters:
00:00-08:04 Pimp culture and sex trafficking
08:04-16:18 The gender violence Black women face
16:18-19:52 Separating hip-hop and pimp culture
19:52-26:11 Relationship examples we grew up with
26:11-36:44 What healing tools are in your toolkit?
36:44-47:03 Turning the tables on pimp culture
47:03-55:35 How misogyny shows up in marriage
More about What’s Pimpin’?, KQED’s new vodcast:
Women rappers and activists Maddy Clifford (a.k.a. MADlines), Coco Peila and RyanNicole - known together as Still I Rise - are taking back the mic. Across three episodes, the hosts facilitate candid discussions about misogynoir and the disproportionate rates of violence Black women face, and how systemic racism and wealth inequality breed desperate conditions where pimp culture thrives. They also get deep, drawing from their personal experiences of moving through an Oakland rap scene that at times espouses both misogynistic and revolutionary ideals.

An article about all-woman bands introduced me to Ace of Cups. I had only known bands like the Runaways before. A huge book could be written about all of these great artists!
What an amazing 👏 traditional dance and dress. She is beautiful! They have held onto their elders/ ancestors believes and traditions.❤❤❤
I have a question: How hard is the part where you are hitting the Taiko?
❤😮😢😂😅😊🎉❤.
AMEN, 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏.
Nice,
So sad I wasn’t alive yet to go to one of their shows back in the day. Their music truly speaks to my soul.
My grandma was Seneca indian! 👋❤️
On the Line before🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏📮🌳🔑👍🏴☠️🛌tragedy👍

Love to see it ❤❤❤❤❤IM AN UPTOWN DC GIRL FOR LIFE 🎉🎉🎉💯💯💯🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰💞💞💞💞💞💞
Excelente Pai!
I saw his work at the Skirball years ago. Never forgot it.
Just saw the movie/documentary "FINDING HER BEAT". What an exceptional documentary. I cried at least 5 times. Bravo for uplifting women to do this level of Taiko. Taking up space and letting the men know that women can Drum and beat the panties off some of the men lolo.
ACAB!
Whattttt a talented dancer my goodness, I have huge huge respect for Amit and his courage to fully embrace his identity is so inspiring and important. It would be an honour to take a class of his one day!
Way back jn 1065 I was an 18 year full time Art student at The Art School, of The University of Washington, in Seattle. I was a male Virgin, and all our Nude Life models were Female, except for two Nude Males. We needed more Nude men like Bob Webb. It was about Art and the nudity was not about SEX. That is until a Female nude model wanted flto have interdorse. Where and when? I went to the men's room to jerk off into the toilet. We still needed more Nude men I regret not posing Nude for 4 hours a week at $20.00 an hour. to supplement my weekend jobs. I still do Nudes and I will soon turn 77 years old.
BEYONCE Could NEVER Compare
So this is the legend who taught Derek Trucks ragas. Need more of this
❤❤❤❤❤
I love everything about this! I am a life model with the same body and beard! Everything this man talks about I have lived. I have had the same thoughts he expresses.
Beautiful piece Sean! Bravo!!
Fantastic.
Sorry but who is this lady?
The freaks come out at night.😂
Simplemente maravilloso ❤
Amazing!
I love her!
Interesting/informative/entertaining. Excellent still-motion photography pictures. Along with the guest speakers. Enabling viewers to better understand what the orator is describing-!!!😉. I've viewed slot of sights in that region. But never that region-!!!😭. Actually purchasing a home there would be an appropriate investment for a vacation homestead-???🤔.
Am so happy to be mixed. Indian African and Spaniards. Love my island. Puerto Rico
Is this kokoro? Song name
WTF? It’s obvious that Caribbean cultures are confused, conflicted, compromised. Why are obvious African percussions being performed with a hybrid gipsy/ African bantun style. Weird

I took tapmin Okinawa ta 8 years old ....been a long time
I was witchall until he said it’s bigger in Texas than in Louisiana. That’s big CAP!! If anything a lot of ppl from Louisiana moved there!!
Then and now--Animators were always the biggest hipsters in society. Very much as part of the counterculture as rock stars---some even resemble rock stars
do do do FAH do do do do do do do do do YAH YOOOOO dagada da da da da dagada da da da DA DA DA YOOOO HELL YEAH lmfao 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣
To ALL my Creole folk, Y'all have any of these last names in y'all fam? : Ardoin, Allain, Henry, Henry de Faveax, Daralis, Crépin, Guillory, Hardy, Sterling, Plumans, Mathews, Nanette, Theriot, Brignac, Fontenot, LeFleur, Bello, Veillon, Donato, Moreau, de la Maro, or LaCasse New Iberia, LA Opelousas, LA St. Landry East & South Texas California Alabama Quebec, Canada France Spain
Question. I WISH I could speak a word of Creole. Texas gal, but momma's side is New Iberia, St. Landry, and Opelousas. How would I learn?
Kid you not, me and my mom AWAYS danced Zydeco together, but I had no idea there was a name for it. I'm a Texas gal, but momma's side hails from New Iberia, Louisiana & some of the early St. Landry families. Haven't been to either place yet. SMH
I live in Sacramento and would like to learn Taiko. Is it expensive?
This is what maga want all over again!
